1. Running the game in Windows on a 4MB machine
===============================================
On machines with 4MB of memory you may find difficulty in freeing
enough EMS/XMS memory to run the game in Windows. You may see a
Windows error dialog which advises you to alter the program PIF.
Do not alter the PIF - it contains the required settings. In order
to run effectively in Windows you may have to select the True DOS
option from the Setup program.

2. Autodetection of Sound Cards
===============================
Kyrandia 3 utilizes sophisticated techniques to autodetect your sound card.
Because of the vast number of machine configurations possible on PC's,
it is possible that it may not autodetect your sound card or it might
misidentify the card. For this reason you should treat the detected card
as a suggestion only. If you know that the card we detect is definitely
wrong you can override the selection and pick the correct card from the
SETUP program.

If a sound card is selected that is not present in the machine unknown
results may occur. Your machine may lock-up, or the sound card may become
undetectable. Either of these situations may be corrected by simply
turning off the computer, and turning it back on.

3. Known Sound Card Problems
============================

	Creative Labs - Soundblaster 1.0/1.5 card
	-----------------------------------------
	These early Soundblaster cards do not support some of
	the features which are built into later versions of the
	card. For this reason, we do not recommend that you
	run the game in Windows unless you select the True DOS
	option.

	Creative Labs - AWE32 card
	--------------------------
	If you have a Creative Labs AWE32 card you must not run the
	Creative Labs Install program to update your sound driver
	programs. Doing this will cause your AWE32 card to function
	incorrectly.

	Gravis Ultra Sound
	------------------
	If you have a Gravis Ultra Sound we recommend that you run
	the game either in DOS or in Windows using True DOS mode.

	Tandy Sensation
	---------------
	We do not support the internal sound on the Tandy Sensation.
	It is possible to run the game on Tandy Sensation by selecting
	no digitized sounds. Alternatively, we do support second
	sound cards in this machine but you will need to modify the
	PLAYER.INI file in the installed game directory to tell the
	game what IRQ, DMA and Port settings you are using (please see
	the later section on avoiding autodetection of soundcards).

	Soundblaster Clones
	-------------------
	The Soundblaster code in K3 is written for 100% Soundblaster
	compatible sound cards made by Creative Labs. If you have a
	Soundblaster compatible sound card from another manufacturer
	you may experience stuttering or popping in the sound, or even
	no sound at all.

	Running in Windows
	------------------
	If the SETUP program does not autodetect a sound card under
	Windows, you may wish to try a DOS install. Certain Windows
	configurations will prevent a sound card from being detected.
	However, manual selection of the proper sound card will allow you
	to avoid a DOS install, as just suggested.

	If while running the game in Windows you see a message like
	"Sound Card is in use by another application", you may need
	to update your sound drivers and you should contact your
	sound card manufacturer. Running the game in True DOS mode
	should also circumvent this problem.

	Running on Some Compaq Computers
	--------------------------------
	Some Compaq machines may not autodetect the installed sound
	card. If this occurs, try selected Sound Blaster Pro/Pro2
	from the SETUP program. This may provide full game audio.

4. Avoiding Sound Card Autodetection
====================================
As noted previously, you may experience difficulty with Kyrandia 3
autodetecting your sound card. If you know the technical settings for
your sound card, you can completely disable autodetection by inserting
the correct settings into the PLAYER.INI file. This file can be found
in the installed game directory (e.g. C:\WESTWOOD\MALCOLM).

Near the top of the PLAYER.INI file you will see a line similar to
the following:

SlowPalette              = False

You may add the following lines immediately after this line:

Port = 220
IRQ = 5
DMA = 1

The numbers shown here are examples. Replace the Port, IRQ and DMA
settings to correspond to your specific sound card settings.
You may need to refer to the documentation that came with your
sound card to find these numbers.

Once you have added these lines to your PLAYER.INI file you should run
the SETUP program again. This time choose NOT to autodetect a sound
card. From Windows, deselect the "Confirm Selection" checkbox before
continuing. From DOS, click OK on the sound card selection without
clicking the TEST button.

5. Windows Setup Notes
======================
We strongly recommend that you do not run any other Windows
applications during the Setup of the game as this may result in
unpredictable behavior.

Windows vs. True DOS modes

Setup presents the choice of 2 modes, Windows and True DOS. Selecting
the Windows option will configure the game to run in Windows as a DOS
application. This means that other Windows processing will continue
to take place in the background, taking away some of the power of the
machine from the game. If any stuttering is apparent in the sound or
video while in this mode, try selecting the True DOS option. This
option will temporarily suspend Windows for the duration of the game,
making the full power of the machine available. When you exit the game
you will be automatically returned to Windows.

True DOS mode can greatly enhance the performance and playability of
the game on 386 and 486 class machines.

6. Video benchmarking
=====================
The first time SETUP is run, usually right after the installation of
Kyrandia 3 is complete, it will automatically perform a video benchmark
of your system. It will determine the best mode for displaying graphics
for your particular system. During this procedure, you may see images
on the screen that are distorted. This is perfectly normal and is no
cause for alarm. The benchmark information will be stored in the
PLAYER.INI file in the K3 game directory. So, even if you rerun the
SETUP program, the benchmark will happen only once. If you wish to
benchmark your system again, after upgrading hardware, for example,
simply delete the PLAYER.INI file before running the SETUP program.
Remember, you must rerun SETUP if you delete the PLAYER.INI file.

7. POWER.EXE
============
It is possible that the power management software (POWER.EXE) included
by some PC suppliers causes problems with Kyrandia 3. If you have
POWER.EXE present in your CONFIG.SYS file and you are experiencing
lock-ups while playing the game, you can try commenting out the
POWER.EXE line in your CONFIG.SYS file. This line typically looks like:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\POWER.EXE

You can comment it out by using a text editor and modifying the
line to read:

REM DEVICE=C:\DOS\POWER.EXE

You will need to reboot the system for the change to take effect. This
will not damage your system but will disable the power management
feature. Change the line back to its original state to re-enable the
feature.

8. Sample AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files
===========================================
If you experience difficulty in running or installing Malcolm's Revenge
for reasons other than those discussed in this README file, it may be
due to conflicts with other programs, or a shortage of conventional RAM
due to the number of programs being loaded by your AUTOEXEC.BAT or
CONFIG.SYS files. Included on the Kyrandia 3 game CD-ROM are some
sample AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files that may help remedy these
types of difficulties. To review these files, simply change to the
CD-ROM drive. (This will probably be D: or E:). They are located in the
SYSTEM directory, and are called CONFIG.EMS, CONFIG.XMS, and AUTOEXEC.BAT.

9. Kyrandia 2: The Hand of Fate Demo
=====================================
We hope you enjoy playing Malcolm's Revenge! If this is your first
venture into the world of Kyrandia, you'll be excited to know that
included on the Kyrandia 3 game CD-ROM is a demo of the Westwood Studios
production of Kyrandia 2: The Hand of Fate. In this adventure, you'll
lead Zanthia from Kyrandia to the Center of the World, and beyond, in an
effort to prevent the very disappearance of Kyrandia!

Zanthia's journey begins in Kyrandia, and this part of the game is
included in the demo and is fully playable. To install the Hand of Fate
demo, do the following:

1. If you are in Windows, please exit. The demo is only installable under
   DOS.

2. Change to your CD-ROM drive letter. (This will probably be D: or E:).

3. Change Directory to HOF_INST. This can be done by typing the command:
   CD HOF_INST

4. Type INSTALL and press <Enter>. This will begin the installation of
   the demo. Follow the INSTALL instructions to complete the installation.

Have fun!
