     Notes on DREADNOUGHTS for the IBM PC + compatibles
     ===================================================

IBM version
===========

     The main program is called: DNOUGHTS.EXE

     The program will select the best graphics option available on
your computer, in the order VGA, EGA then CGA. If at any time you
upgrade your computer, say from CGA to VGA, then there is no need
to purchase a new version of Dreadnoughts, this program will simply
detect the better graphics adapter and run in that mode.

Backups
=======

     Please make one backup of each of the enclosed disks.

Installing on a Hard Disk
=========================

     To install DREADNOUGHTS on a hard disk, simply create a suitable
directory (say DNOUGHTS) and copy all the files on the disk(s) into it.

The mouse and the cursor keys
=============================

     The mouse is used to point a telescope, to use it ensure that
a mouse driver has been loaded before running DNOUGHTS. If you do
not have a mouse, the telescope pointer can be moved using the
cursor keys.

     In order to focus on any ship aim the mouse pointer as close as
possible to the centre of the ship.

     The cursor keys can also be used to edit text.

Viewing the captains decisions
==============================

     If you answer "Y" to the question on viewing each captain's
decisions, a note will appear at the bottom of the screen. Players
new to Dreadnoughts should answer "Y", but experienced players
should answer "N" as to a certain extent it gives away the enemy's
intentions!

<k>
===

     Whenever the above symbol appears, on the bottom of the screen,
the program is waiting for you to press a key.

Saving and Restoring games
==========================

     If you answer "Y" to the question on saving off the game data,
then the game is easily recoverable should anything unwanted happen.

     It is recommended that this option is used on hard disk systems,
but floppy disk users may not have the disk space so may wish to turn
this feature off and save game data using the SAVE command.

     Game data is stored in a file with the extension .SGM, so for
example saving off data for the Battle of Coronel will create a file
called CORONEL.SGM (note that this will over-write any previous
saved game data for Coronel).

Unsure of what to do?
=====================

     If you are unsure of the concept of the game, watch a
battle between two computer opponents (by answering "N" to the

question on whether you wish a human to play each admiral).

     Alternatively, when asked to enter orders simply hit the
Esc key, the ship's officers will give advice on what to do, and
ask your permission to do it.

The Maps
========

     The fleet flagships are printed in capitals in the fleet
lists, "Flag" refers to a squadron flagship.

     The map for the Battle of Jutland is the large scale one
occupying a full side of the sheet.

On the other side:

Top left:      Coronel and Canopus
Top right:     Falklands
Bottom left:   Dogger Bank
Bottom right: Seatrial and Channel Patrol

Additional Order
================

     There is one additional order not mentioned in the manual,
which enables a Fleet Admiral to transfer to another ship, which
then becomes the flagship.

Format: CONVEY MY FLAG TO THE <ship>

     This can only be done when the ships are very close and moving
slowly or at anchor. Also the wind must not be too strong, both ships
should not be completely disabled, and there should be no enemy ships
in the near vicinity.

     If any of these conditions hold then you will be told that it
is too dangerous to cross.

     Hint: Flagships often had an attendant destroyer to enable the
Admiral to first transfer to the destroyer, and then onto another
capital ship.

Sound Effects
=============

     DREADNOUGHTS produces sound output compatible with Creative
Lab's SoundBlaster Pro card. If this card is not present then

there is no sound output (no attempt is made to drive the PC's
own speaker).

     The sound effects will not pan or fade properly with earlier
versions of the SoundBlaster card.

     Ensure that the drivers CT-VOICE.DRV and AUXDRV.DRV are copied
to the DREADNOUGHTS directory, and that the instructions for setting
up the SoundBlaster environment have been followed correctly.

     Sound Blaster is a trade mark of Creative Labs Inc, Santa
Clara, California.

                              End
                         =============
