What will the next century be like? Will we cure cancer, build space factories and have a shuttle service to the Moon, or will there be increasingly bad environmental problems, shortages, or even nuclear warfare.
There is no shortage of predictions about what the next century will be like.
Some of the more upbeat projections are that:
-- Man will cure both cancer and the common cold.
-- Seawater will be easily desalinated.
-- Superconductivity will make electrical devices much more efficient.
-- There will be regular flights from the Earth to the Moon.
-- Orbiting solar power stations will transmit electricity to Earth.
-- It will be possible to clone human organs.
-- New drugs will help people learn, or will help them change bad habits.
-- Genetic engineering will increase farm productivity dramatically.
-- Chemical treatments will control aging, enabling people to live to be 150 or 200.
But there are also the unpleasant predictions:
-- Nations may use nuclear weapons in their battles.
-- As the number of people in developing countries grows, there could be increasing shortages of food and minerals.
-- Immigration to wealthy nations could cause racial and cultural problems.
-- Environmental problems could degrade the quality of life on Earth.
