ANTARCTIC COAST
Though penguins always look very formal in their black-and-white or gray-and-white evening attire, their appearance quickly changes from staid and conservative to humorous as they waddle across the ground.
Though these birds are not very fast on their feet and can't fly at all, penguins can swim like fish, speeding up to 30 miles an hour in the icy Antarctic waters, using their wings as flippers.
Though most penguins live together in rookeries in the harsh Antarctic, catching shrimp-like krill from the surrounding waters, some penguins live as far north as the Galapagos Islands, near the equator.
There are about 17 species of penguins, ranging from the giant Emperor, which grows to four feet tall and up to 60 pounds, down to the Adelie, which is about one-and-a-half feet tall and weighs about 12 pounds.
